This will help you get a feel for the differences in laying a patio besides the ways listed below.

Excavation
This step is the first and most important. Once you have chosen your brick and location of the patio we will begin to excavate the area for the patio. Most likely if you have contracted out the work, the contractor will have a mimi-excavator. This will take only a few hours to excavate to the right depth. If you are going to do it yourself you can dig by hand or call around and rent a mini-excavator.

Laying the Gravel Base
The next step to constructing your patio is laying the gravel base. This is an important process because the gravel, if installed correctly will prevent the patio from major sinking. This will provide an excellent base for your patio.

Laying the Sand
The next process is laying an even one inch thick layer of sand over the compacted gravel. This process needs to be taken seriously. In order to have an even patio you will need to have the sand as level as possible over the entire patio. Once you have the entire patio screeded you can begin to lay the brick.

Laying the Brick
Laying the brick is the next step. Once all the brick are laid and cut you can move on to your next step.

Finish Work
This step is the easiest step to complete in the whole project. This will interlock all the brick together for a tight patio. Once you have completed this step your patio is done.

Installation of Plants
The installation of the plants in the next step to beautifying your patio. By now I hope you have your plants purchased and sitting by the patio ready to be planted. The mulch should accent the house as well at the plants and patio.
